In 1 Nephi 17, Nephi tells about Moses leading the Israelites out of Egypt to the promised land. Some fall along the way due to their unrighteousness and unbelief. Because the inhabitants of Canaan are unrighteous and have rejected the Lord, the Lord destroys them, and builds up Israel in their place.

Now, the Jews of Israel in Jerusalem have become unrighteous and unbelieving, and they will be destroyed by the Lord, and Babylon will be built up. The Lord has led the Lehites out of Jerusalem and is leading them to their promised land, and has given them trials along the way, just as he gave the Israelites.

What is the condition in the promised land they are being led to? If I recall correctly, the Jaredites either have been or are being destroyed by the Lord, and the Lehites will later take over their land. (They will discover this much later.)

Interestingly, soon after the Lehites arrive in the promised land, Nephi will be led out of the land of their first inheritance, and a few hundred years later Mosiah will be led the righteous out of the land of Nephi to the land of Zarahemla, while the unrighteous Nephites who remain in the land will be destroyed by the Lord, and the Lamanites will take over their land.
