“Alma 31: The Zoramites: Pride and Elected by God” by grego

Alma 31: The Zoramites: Pride and Elected by God

grego

There seems to be a lot here, and I think this will be my next big study.

I will start with a general thing: the Zoramites are proud. They think they are the chosen children of God:

Alma 31:16 Holy God, we believe that thou hast separated us from our brethren; and we do not believe in the tradition of our brethren, which was handed down to them by the childishness of their fathers; but we believe that thou hast elected us to be thy holy
children…

Alma 31:17 …thou hast elected us that we shall be saved, whilst all around us are elected to be cast by thy wrath down to hell; for the which holiness, O God, we thank thee; and we also thank thee that thou hast elected us, that we may not be led away after the foolish traditions of our brethren…

Alma 31:18 And again we thank thee, O God, that we are a chosen and a holy people. Amen.

I have heard of a guy who, years ago while on his mission in the Caribbean, was told by a visiting Seventy (general authority) that he was a special chosen one, and taught “secret knowledge” “hidden from the normal members of the LDS Church” (which turned out to be anti-doctrines).

He bought into it; years later, he still believes it.

Don’t you.

This is completely contrary to the gospel of Jesus Christ.

The gospel is open and available to all, regardless.

God does not choose those whom he will save, and cast the others out: all humans are his children, all are invited to be saved, He wants to save all, He will save all as much as possible, all *can* be saved—if they so choose. He has no favorites that receive his extra benefits, “just because”.

We allow God to choose us, based on our faith, desires of the heart, opportunities, righteousness, and faithfulness.

All who will be saved, will be saved—the decision to be saved will be a personal decision followed by personal actions to accept God saving us (of course, according to God’s way, and through Jesus Christ).

Here are some other Book of Mormon verses that show the gospel is not for just a chosen few:

Alma 38:14 Do not say: O God, I thank thee that we are better than our brethren; but rather say: O Lord, forgive my unworthiness, and remember my brethren in mercy—yea, acknowledge your unworthiness before God at all times.

1 Nephi 10:17 And it came to pass after I, Nephi, having heard all the words of my father, concerning the things which he saw in a vision, and also the things which he spake by the power of the Holy Ghost, which power he received by faith on the Son of
God—and the Son of God was the Messiah who should come—I, Nephi, was desirous also that I might see, and hear, and know of these things, by the power of the Holy Ghost, which is the gift of God unto all those who diligently seek him, as well in times
of old as in the time that he should manifest himself unto the children of men.

1 Nephi 10:18 For he is the same yesterday, to-day, and forever; and the way is prepared for all men from the foundation of the world, if it so be that they repent and come unto him.

2 Nephi 2:7 Behold, he offereth himself a sacrifice for sin, to answer the ends of the law, unto all those who have a broken heart and a contrite spirit; and unto none else can the ends of the law be answered.

2 Nephi 2:27 Wherefore, men are free according to the flesh; and all things are given them which are expedient unto man. And they are free to choose liberty and eternal life, through the great Mediator of all men, or to choose captivity and death, according
to the captivity and power of the devil; for he seeketh that all men might be miserable like unto himself.

2 Nephi 10:23 Therefore, cheer up your hearts, and remember that ye are free to act for yourselves—to choose the way of everlasting death or the way of eternal life.

2 Nephi 25:13 Behold, they will crucify him; and after he is laid in a sepulchre for the space of three days he shall rise from the dead, with healing in his wings; and all those who shall believe on his name shall be saved in the kingdom of God. Wherefore, my soul delighteth to prophesy concerning him, for I have seen his day, and my heart doth magnify his holy name.

2 Nephi 26:13 And that he manifesteth himself unto all those who believe in him, by the power of the Holy Ghost; yea, unto every nation, kindred, tongue, and people, working mighty miracles, signs, and wonders, among the children of men according to their faith.

2 Nephi 26:27 Hath he commanded any that they should not partake of his salvation? Behold I say unto you, Nay; but he hath given it free for all men; and he hath commanded his people that they should persuade all men to repentance.

2 Nephi 26:28 Behold, hath the Lord commanded any that they should not partake of his goodness? Behold I say unto you, Nay; but all men are privileged the one like unto the other, and none are forbidden.

2 Nephi 26:33: For none of these iniquities come of the Lord; for he doeth that which is good among the children of men; and he doeth nothing save it be plain unto the children of men; and he inviteth them all to come unto him and partake of his goodness; and he denieth none that come unto him, black and white, bond and free, male and female; and he remembereth the heathen; and all are alike unto God, both Jew and Gentile.

Mosiah 15:11 Behold I say unto you, that whosoever has heard the words of the prophets, yea, all the holy prophets who have prophesied concerning the coming of the Lord—I say unto you, that all those who have hearkened unto their words, and believed that the Lord would redeem his people, and have looked forward to that day for a remission of their sins, I say unto you, that these are his seed, or they are heirs of the kingdom of God.

Alma 9:17 And at some period of time they will be brought to believe in his word, and to know of the incorrectness of the traditions of their fathers; and many of them will be saved, for the Lord will be merciful unto all who call on his name.

Alma 22:13 And Aaron did expound unto him the scriptures from the creation of Adam, laying the fall of man before him, and their carnal state and also the plan of redemption, which was prepared from the foundation of the world, through Christ, for all whosoever would believe on his name.

Alma 32:22 And now, behold, I say unto you, and I would that ye should remember, that God is merciful unto all who believe on his name; therefore he desireth, in the first place, that ye should believe, yea, even on his word.

Alma 34:15 And thus he shall bring salvation to all those who shall believe on his name; this being the intent of this last sacrifice, to bring about the bowels of mercy, which overpowereth justice, and bringeth about means unto men that they may have faith unto repentance.

Helaman 3:27 Thus we may see that the Lord is merciful unto all who will, in the sincerity of their hearts, call upon his holy name.

Helaman 3:28 Yea, thus we see that the gate of heaven is open unto all, even to those who will believe on the name of Jesus Christ, who is the Son of God.

Helaman 3:29 Yea, we see that whosoever will may lay hold upon the word of God, which is quick and powerful, which shall divide asunder all the cunning and the snares and the wiles of the devil, and lead the man of Christ in a strait and narrow course across that everlasting gulf of misery which is prepared to engulf the wicked—

Helaman 3:30 And land their souls, yea, their immortal souls, at the right hand of God in the kingdom of heaven, to sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and with Jacob, and with all our holy fathers, to go no more out.

Helaman 14:2 And behold, he said unto them: Behold, I give unto you a sign; for five years more cometh, and behold, then cometh the Son of God to redeem all those who shall believe on his name.

Moroni 7:28 For he hath answered the ends of the law, and he claimeth all those who have faith in him; and they who have faith in him will cleave unto every good thing; wherefore he advocateth the cause of the children of men; and he dwelleth eternally in the heavens.

Book of Mormon | “Pray for Your Enemies” by grego

Today I was unhappy with a guy (I had left my door partly open, the porch light on, and a “no parking” sign out, and he had still parked his car in front of my house for a while, blocking my driveway, and didn’t leave a phone number on his car). I believe I was a little too strong explaining that I wasn’t happy; it wasn’t that bad, but still, afterward I felt bad. I felt so bad, I prayed for him for a while. I had a few thoughts about praying for your enemies.

Pray for your enemies.
Who knows, if you pray for your enemy, if maybe your enemy will change from a horrible person to a wonderful person;
Who knows, if you pray for your enemy, if maybe they won’t change, but you will realize your enemy is a wonderful person instead of a horrible person;
Who knows, if you pray for your enemy, if maybe they will be happier, and maybe even help others be happier, too;
Who knows, if you pray for your enemy, if maybe they will repent of their sins, and know Jesus, because of your prayers;
Who knows, if you pray for your enemy, if maybe you will be forgiven of your sins and mistakes, too;
Who knows, if you pray for your enemy, if maybe you will save your life;
Who knows, if you pray for your enemy, if maybe they will pray for you;
Who knows, if you pray for your enemy, if maybe they will bless others;
Who knows, if you pray for your enemy, if maybe they will pray for their enemies;
Who knows, if you pray for your enemy, if maybe they will one day make up for what they did to you, much more than you would imagine;
Who knows, if you pray for your enemy, if maybe one day instead of wanting to avoid them, or yell at them, or hit them, you will want to run to them, hug them and shed tears, and love them;
Who knows, if you pray for your enemy, if maybe one day they will save you and/ or someone you love very much;
I *do* know, if you pray for your enemies, you will be blessed; for “pray for your enemies” is a commandment clearly given to us; and when we obey any commandment of God, we receive a blessing from God.

3 Nephi 12:43 And behold it is written also, that thou shalt love thy neighbor and hate thine enemy;
3 Nephi 12:44 But behold I say unto you, love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them who despitefully use you and persecute you;

Did not Jesus pray for his enemies? And who are his enemies? Isn’t an enemy someone who hurts us? Someone who makes us suffer? So, how much did Jesus suffer because of what *you* thought, said, and did?
3 Nephi 17:17 And no tongue can speak, neither can there be written by any man, neither can the hearts of men conceive so great and marvelous things as we both saw and heard Jesus speak; and no one can conceive of the joy which filled our souls at the time we heard him pray for us unto the Father.

If we don’t pray for our enemies, how can we take the sacrament with clean hands and a pure heart?

Remember that we would all be enemies to God without Jesus Christ.

Remember, as Alma teaches in Alma 38:14:
Alma 38:14 Do not say: O God, I thank thee that we are better than our brethren; but rather say: O Lord, forgive my unworthiness, and remember my brethren in mercy–yea, acknowledge your unworthiness before God at all times.
