From the Book of Mormon:
Mormon 1:19 And it came to pass that there were sorceries, and witchcrafts, and magics; and the power of the evil one was wrought upon all the face of the land, even unto the fulfilling of all the words of Abinadi, and also Samuel the Lamanite.

Except that we don’t have these prophecies of Abinadi and Samuel the Lamanite in the abridged edition (what we have now)!

We do have clear mention that they said more that wasn’t written, and it even fits in the right areas of their other prophecies:

Abinadi: Mosiah 12:8 And it shall come to pass that except they repent I will utterly destroy them from off the face of the earth; yet they shall leave a record behind them, and I will preserve them for other nations which shall possess the land; yea, even this will I do that I may discover the abominations of this people to other nations. And many things did Abinadi prophesy against this people.

Samuel the Lamanite: Helaman 14:1 AND now it came to pass that Samuel, the Lamanite, did prophesy a great many more things which cannot be written.

Still, Mormon puts the fulfilling of the prophecies in, which is an important purpose of the Book of Mormon.

In the Book of Mormon, Jesus tells Nephi:
3 Nephi 1:14 Behold, I come unto my own, to fulfil all things which I have made known unto the children of men from the foundation of the world, and to do the will, both of the Father and of the Son–of the Father because of me, and of the Son because of my flesh. And behold, the time is at hand, and this night shall the sign be given.

What does that one part mean–“to do the will, both of the Father and of the Son–of the Father because of me, and of the Son because of my flesh”?

At this time Jesus is still a spirit and God, in perfect knowledge, understanding, and unity with His father, God the Father, which also meant he still knew exactly what he was coming to earth for—hence “of the Father because of me”.

When Jesus would come to earth, He would do the will of the Father, as His spirit did at that time when He was just a spirt; He would also inherit powers and blessings from His Father.

“[A]nd of the Son”–of Jesus’ own will, deciding to follow the Father and do the Father’s bidding, notwithstanding His limited knowledge of godly things while in His mortal life, especially at the beginning, a more complete knowledge gained through faith, obedience, and seeking His Father; notwithstanding the temptations of Satan; and the ability to suffer weaknesses of the body of flesh He would receive from His mother.

This is similar to what Abinadi preaches:
Mosiah 15:2 And because he dwelleth in flesh he shall be called the Son of God, and having subjected the flesh to the will of the Father, being the Father and the Son–
Mosiah 15:3 The Father, because he was conceived by the power of God; and the Son, because of the flesh; thus becoming the Father and Son–
Mosiah 15:4 And they are one God, yea, the very Eternal Father of heaven and of earth.
Mosiah 15:5 And thus the flesh becoming subject to the Spirit, or the Son to the Father, being one God, suffereth temptation, and yieldeth not to the temptation, but suffereth himself to be mocked, and scourged, and cast out, and disowned by his people.
Mosiah 15:7 Yea, even so he shall be led, crucified, and slain, the flesh becoming subject even unto death, the will of the Son being swallowed up in the will of the Father.

By receiving His own body, the distinction between the Father and the Son would in some ways be even clearer and more distinct. By growing closer to God over His lifetime, and continuing to do the Father’s will in harder and harder things, He and His Father grew closer to having the most perfect unity they once had before Jesus came in the flesh.

Jesus life was to do the will of the Father:
John 5:30 I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.

This is best typified in His prayers in the garden of Gethsemane:
Matthew 26:38 Then saith he unto them, *My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death*: tarry ye here, and watch with me.
Matthew 26:39 And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless *not as I will, but as thou wilt*.
Matthew 26:42 He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, O my Father, *if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done*.

Mark 14:35 And he went forward a little, and fell on the ground, and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him.
Mark 14:36 And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee; take away this cup from me: nevertheless *not what I will, but what thou wilt*.

Luke 22:42 Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless *not my will, but thine, be done*.
Luke 22:44 And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.

When Jesus appears to the Nephites, He says,
3 Nephi 11:10 Behold, I am Jesus Christ…
3 Nephi 11:11 And behold…*I have drunk out of that bitter cup which the Father hath given me*, and have glorified the Father in taking upon me the sins of the world, in the which *I have suffered the will of the Father in all things from the beginning*.

Jesus did come to do both the will of the Father and His own will—because they are both actually just one and the same, and always have been, and always will be.

There is a power struggle between king Noah and the Lord going on over ownership of the people, with a second tier of the wicked priests and Abinadi. Notice both sides’: claims to the people, the sins and the anger and the judgments of the owner, and how the judgments will be settled, and by whom.

Mosiah 11:20 And it came to pass that there was a man among them whose name was Abinadi; and he went forth among them, and began to prophesy, saying: Behold, *thus saith the Lord, and thus hath he commanded me, saying, Go forth, and say unto this people, thus saith the Lord–Wo be unto THIS people*, for I have seen their abominations, and their wickedness, and their whoredoms; and except they repent *I will visit them in mine anger*.

Mosiah 11:21 And except they repent and turn to the Lord their God, behold, *I will deliver them into the hands of their enemies*; yea, and they shall be brought into bondage; and they shall be afflicted by the hand of their enemies.

Mosiah 11:22 And it shall come to pass that *they shall know that I am the Lord their God*, and am a jealous God, visiting the iniquities of *MY people*.

Mosiah 11:23 And it shall come to pass that *except THIS people repent* and turn unto the Lord their God, they shall be brought into bondage; and none shall deliver them, except it be the Lord the Almighty God.

Mosiah 11:24 Yea, and it shall come to pass that when *they shall cry unto me* I will be slow to hear their cries; yea, and *I will suffer them that they be smitten by their enemies*.

Mosiah 11:25 And except they repent in sackcloth and ashes, and cry mightily to the Lord their God, I will not hear their prayers, neither will I deliver them out of their afflictions; and thus saith the Lord, and thus hath he commanded me.

Mosiah 11:26 Now it came to pass that when Abinadi had spoken these words unto them *they were wroth with him*, and *sought to take away his life*; but *the Lord delivered him out of their hands*.

Mosiah 11:27 Now when king Noah had heard of the words which Abinadi had spoken unto the people, *he was also wroth*; and he said: Who is Abinadi, that I and my people should be judged of him, or *who is the Lord, that shall bring upon *MY people* such great affliction*?

Mosiah 11:28 I command you to bring Abinadi hither, that *I may slay him*, for he has said these things that he might stir up *MY people* to anger one with another, and to raise contentions among *MY people*; therefore *I will slay him*.

Mosiah 11:29 Now the eyes of the people were blinded; therefore they hardened their hearts against the words of Abinadi, and they sought from that time forward to take him. And king Noah hardened his heart against the word of the Lord, and he did not repent of his evil doings.

Mosiah 12:1 And it came to pass that after the space of two years that Abinadi came among them in disguise, that they knew him not, and began to prophesy among them, saying: Thus has the Lord commanded me, saying–Abinadi, go and prophesy unto *THIS MY people*, for they have hardened their hearts against my words; they have repented not of their evil doings; therefore, *I will visit them in my anger, yea, in my fierce anger will I visit them in their iniquities and abominations*.

Mosiah 12:2 Yea, wo be unto this generation! And the Lord said unto me: Stretch forth thy hand and prophesy, saying: Thus saith the Lord, it shall come to pass that *THIS generation*, because of their iniquities, shall be *brought into bondage, and shall be smitten on the cheek; yea, and shall be driven by men, and shall be slain; and the vultures of the air, and the dogs, yea, and the wild beasts, shall devour their flesh*.

Mosiah 12:3 And it shall come to pass that *the life of king Noah shall be valued even as a garment in a hot furnace*; for *he shall know that I am the Lord*.

Mosiah 12:4 And it shall come to pass that *I will smite this my people with sore afflictions, yea, with famine and with pestilence; and I will cause that they shall howl all the day long*.

Mosiah 12:5 Yea, and *I* will cause that they shall have burdens lashed upon their backs; and they shall be driven before like a dumb ass.

Mosiah 12:6 And it shall come to pass that *I* will send forth hail among them, and it shall smite them; and they shall also be smitten with the east wind; and insects shall pester their land also, and devour their grain.

Mosiah 12:7 And they shall be smitten with a great pestilence–and all this will *I* do because of their iniquities and abominations.

Mosiah 12:8 And it shall come to pass that except they repent *I* will utterly destroy them from off the face of the earth; yea, even *this will I do* that I may discover the abominations of this people to other nations. And many things did Abinadi prophesy against *THIS people*.

Mosiah 12:9 And it came to pass that *they were angry with him*; and they took him and carried him bound before the king, and said unto the king: Behold, we have brought a man before thee who has prophesied evil concerning *THY people*, and saith that *God will destroy them*.

Mosiah 12:10 *And he also prophesieth evil concerning thy life, and saith that thy life shall be as a garment in a furnace of fire.

Mosiah 12:11 And again, he saith that thou shalt be as a stalk, even as a dry stalk of the field, which is run over by the beasts and trodden under foot.

Mosiah 12:12 And again, he saith thou shalt be as the blossoms of a thistle, which, when it is fully ripe, if the wind bloweth, it is driven forth upon the face of the land. And *he pretendeth the Lord hath spoken it. And he saith all this shall come upon thee except thou repent, and this because of thine iniquities*.

Mosiah 12:13 And now, *O king, what great evil hast thou done*, or what great sins have *THY people* committed, that *we should be condemned of God* or judged of this man?

And king Noah and his wicked priests condemn and burn Abinadi, and Abinadi curses the seed of the wicked priests; the prophecies regarding king Noah, the people, and the descendants are fulfilled; and the people become the Lord’s people after many cries and much humility.

Ok, a few comments. I guess this could also turn into a big article… nah, let’s keep it shorter.

Note that as with comments from other prophets (such as with Jacob), Abinadi was commanded by the Lord to preach. He didn’t just see what was going on and feel like, “Hey, I’ll preach” and do it.

He prophesies; as with other prophecies in the Book of Mormon (like to the people of Ammonihah), some of the fulfillment of the prophecy is recorded, some isn’t.

Who Is God? Who Is His Prophet?

King Noah asks, as do a few others (such as the people in Ammonihah),
“Who is Abinadi, that I and my people should be judged of him, or who is the Lord, that shall bring upon my people such great affliction?” (Mosiah 11:27).

So Abinadi says:
“And it shall come to pass that the life of king Noah shall be valued even as a garment in a hot furnace; for he shall know that I am the Lord” (Mosiah 12:3).

God makes himself known to man in two ways: nicely (to the repentant), or not nicely (to the proud and unrepentant).

WHO’s Pretending?!?

King Noah’s priests say:
“And he pretendeth the Lord hath spoken it. And he saith all this shall come upon thee except thou repent, and this because of thine iniquities” (Mosiah 12:12).

When King Noah’s priests question him, Abinadi replies:
“And now Abinadi said unto them: Are you priests, and pretend to teach this people, and to understand the spirit of prophesying, and yet desire to know of me what these things mean?” (Mosiah 12:25).

The pretending has now been thrust to the other side… Along with the questioning.

We Are Strong!!
King Noah’s priests say:

And now, O king, what great evil hast thou done, or what great sins have thy people committed, that we should be condemned of God or judged of this man? (Mosiah 12:13).
And now, O king, behold, we are guiltless, and thou, O king, hast not sinned; therefore, this man has lied concerning you, and he has prophesied in vain” (Mosiah 12:14).
And behold, we are strong, we shall not come into bondage, or be taken captive by our enemies; yea, and thou hast prospered in the land, and thou shalt also prosper” (Mosiah 12:15).

Mosiah 12:16
Behold, here is the man, we deliver him into thy hands; thou mayest do with him as seemeth thee good.

Well, ok, whatever. Abinadi shows that they have plenty of sin. That should help them understand that his prophesying was not in vain, that he wasn’t lying, that they would be overcome by the Lamanites.
Nope.
Ok, let’s go a little further.

They were proud of kicking Lamanite tail, and it went to their head. Yet, here’s the incredible irony: when it’s all them and the guards and the king against one man (Abinadi), they can’t even kill, much less capture, one man!!:

Mosiah 13:2 And they stood forth and attempted to lay their hands on him; but he withstood them, and said unto them:
Mosiah 13:3 Touch me not, for God shall smite you if ye lay your hands upon me, for I have not delivered the message which the Lord sent me to deliver; neither have I told you that which ye requested that I should tell; therefore, God will not suffer that I shall be destroyed at this time.
Mosiah 13:4 But I must fulfil the commandments wherewith God has commanded me; and because I have told you the truth ye are angry with me. And again, because I have spoken the word of God ye have judged me that I am mad.
Mosiah 13:5 Now it came to pass after Abinadi had spoken these words that the people of king Noah durst not lay their hands on him, for the Spirit of the Lord was upon him; and his face shone with exceeding luster, even as Moses’ did while in the mount of Sinai, while speaking with the Lord.
Mosiah 13:6 And he spake with power and authority from God; and he continued his words, saying:
Mosiah 13:7 Ye see that ye have not power to slay me, therefore I finish my message.

God’s Word–Nice or Not Nice?

No matter how dumb people are, when they are wicked and think they are powerful they just can’t pass up the chance to try to whip up on the little man. No exception here:

And it came to pass that they said unto the king: Bring him hither that we may question him; and the king commanded that he should be brought before them (Mosiah 12:15).
And they began to question him, that they might cross him, that thereby they might have wherewith to accuse him; but he answered them boldly, and withstood all their questions, yea, to their astonishment; for he did withstand them in all their questions, and did confound them in all their words(Mosiah 12:19).

Ok, they’re getting a little ticked off here. This was supposed to be easy! So,
Mosiah 12:20 …one of them said unto him: What meaneth the words which are written, and which have been taught by our fathers, saying:
Mosiah 12:21 How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings; that publisheth peace; that bringeth good tidings of good; that publisheth salvation; that saith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth…

That is in response to Abinadi’s prophesying evil concerning the people and the king (Mosiah 12:9, 10).
Mosiah 12:9 “…Behold, we have brought a man before thee who has prophesied evil concerning thy people, and saith that God will destroy them” (Mosiah 12:9); “And he also prophesieth evil concerning thy life” (Mosiah 12:10).

In other words, if you claim to be a prophet, why are your words not like the words the prophets are supposed to speak–you know, words like beautiful, good, peaceful, salvation? Well, as Abinadi explains, the words of God are nice–to the repentant (Mosiah 15:10-25; 28-31; 16:1, 11); but they aren’t nice to the unrepentant (Mosiah 15:26-27; 16:2-5, 11-13).

Moses and his Law and Another Sign

King Noah’s priests were supposed to be up on the law of Moses:
Mosiah 12:28 And they said: We teach the law of Moses.

Just that while they might have kept the outward ordinances, they missed the “commandments” part:
Mosiah 12:29 And again he said unto them: If ye teach the law of Moses why do ye not keep it? Why do ye set your hearts upon riches? Why do ye commit whoredoms and spend your strength with harlots, yea, and cause this people to commit sin, that the Lord has cause to send me to prophesy against this people, yea, even a great evil against this people?

They want to kill him. So, to help King Noah’s priests even more, God gives them yet another sign to show that Abinadi is his prophet:

Mosiah 12:33 But now Abinadi said unto them: I know if ye keep the commandments of God ye shall be saved; yea, if ye keep the commandments which the Lord delivered unto Moses in the mount of Sinai, saying:

Mosiah 13:5 Now it came to pass after Abinadi had spoken these words that the people of king Noah durst not lay their hands on him, for the Spirit of the Lord was upon him; and his face shone with exceeding luster, even as Moses’ did while in the mount of Sinai, while speaking with the Lord.

Did they catch that connection? Well, did or didn’t, it still wasn’t enough…

Hey, King Noah’s Priests, Is This You, Too?

Hey guys, do you make these same mistakes? If so, it might be for the same reason! You know, hardheartedness and all that. See, ALL the *real* prophets (not the pretend ones like you all)–understand and prophecy of Christ, not the law of Moses.
Such a nice way for Abinadi to tell them…
Mosiah 13:32 And now, did they understand the law? I say unto you, Nay, they did not all understand the law; and this because of the hardness of their hearts; for they understood not that there could not any man be saved except it were through the redemption of God.
Mosiah 13:33 For behold, did not Moses prophesy unto them concerning the coming of the Messiah, and that God should redeem his people? Yea, and even all the prophets who have prophesied ever since the world began–have they not spoken more or less concerning these things?

Sins vs. Sins and Hypocrisy and Priestcraft and Lying

God does not just punish for our sins, but for hypocrisy and lying about our sins:

Mosiah 12:31 And it shall come to pass that ye shall be smitten for your iniquities, for ye have said that ye teach the law of Moses.

Abinadi is a Type of Christ

He is called by God to preach to a lost people.
He is brought before the king.
King Noah’s priests revile him and question him.
King Noah’s priests claim the law of Moses saves; they know nothing of Christ.
King Noah’s priests get mad when he confounds them.
He proves God himself is the saving force, not the law of Moses.
Signs are given to persuade the people and stand as witnesses against them.
They don’t have power to take his life.
His face shines.
Even though it’s all them against him, they are scared (in the Garden of Gethsemane).
He quotes Isaiah. Messianically, even.
He explains who the Son is, and why.
The king wants to release him, but King Noah’s priests do all they can to cause his death.
In the end, the king consents.
They plan to kill him; he tells them they will shed “innocent blood”.
Through all this, he is alone.
They kill him anyway.
He says: “O God, receive my soul” and dies.

A Mistake in the Book of Mormon?

Mosiah 13:12 And now, *ye remember that I said unto you*: Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of things which are *in heaven above*, or which are *in the earth beneath*, or which are IN THE WATER UNDER THE EARTH.

Yet, earlier, it is recorded that Abinadi said only this:
Mosiah 12:36 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing *in heaven above*, or things which are *in the earth beneath*.

“Read”

Mosiah 13:11 And now I read unto you the remainder of the commandments of God, for I perceive that they are not written in your hearts; I perceive that ye have studied and taught iniquity the most part of your lives.

Such would be incredible irony and even humor, to scold them for not having the commandments written in their hearts, then have to read to them from the scriptures. Of course, I don’t have hardly any scripture completely memorized, much less a chapter or two (sorry, sorry, don’t pass it around). I wonder if he actually reads from scripture, or if “read” is used maybe as it’s sometimes used in Chinese, which means more of “to recite” than to literally “read” while looking at what was written. It was already somewhat outdated at that time, but… I guess it’s possible.

On the other hand, it’s likely his comment and method are brutally obvious that the priests were never schooled in their subject, and as such, he would like to play teacher and “open the books” in their presence and perhaps give them their first real lesson!

Critique 3 of John Tvedtnes Comment in Meridian Magazine–Amulonites

Textual Errors

Some misunderstandings have arisen from errors in the text of the Book of Mormon. A good example is found in Alma 43:13-14:
“the Nephites were compelled, alone, to withstand against the Lamanites, who were a compound of Laman and Lemuel, and the sons of Ishmael, and all those who had dissented from the Nephites, who were Amalekites and Zoramites, and the descendants of the priests of Noah. Now those descendants were as numerous, nearly, as were the Nephites; and thus the Nephites were obliged to contend with their brethren, even unto bloodshed.”
The wording of this passage, suggests that it was the “descendants of the priests of Noah” who “were as numerous, nearly, as were the Nephites.” In view of the fact that these priests had captured only 24 Lamanite women to take as wives (Mosiah 20:1-5), it is unlikely that they could have become nearly as numerous as the Nephites. I wondered if perhaps Alma 43:14 should read “dissenters” rather than “descendants.”

A check with the text of the printer’s manuscript of the Book of Mormon, from which the 1830 edition was typeset, showed agreement with the printed editions. But the original manuscript, from which the printer’s manuscript was copied, reads “de[se]nte[r]s,” thus demonstrating that the passage should note that it was the total number of dissenters who were nearly as numerous as the Nephites, not the “descendants” of the priests of Noah. The error was made during the copying of the printer’s manuscript, when the word in the original was misread. [13] ”

Tvedtnes is correct here, but for another reason: by this time, the seed of the priests of Noah–the Amulonites–had already had some problems, eh. This is in Alma 43, but earlier in Alma 25, we read that:
“4 And *among the Lamanites who were slain were almost all the seed of Amulon and his brethren, who were the priests of Noah, and they were slain by the hands of the Nephites*…
5 And *the remainder, having fled into the east wilderness, and having usurped the power and authority over the Lamanites*, caused that many of the Lamanites should perish by fire because of their belief—

7 And it came to pass that *those rulers who were the remnant of the children of Amulon caused that they should be put to death*, yea, all those that believed in these things.
8 Now this martyrdom caused that many of their brethren should be stirred up to anger; and there began to be contention in the wilderness; and *the Lamanites began to hunt the seed of Amulon and his brethren and began to slay them; and they fled into the east wilderness*.
9 And behold *they are hunted at this day by the Lamanites*. Thus the words of Abinadi were brought to pass, which he said concerning the seed of the priests who caused that he should suffer death by fire.

12 And he said unto the priests of Noah that their seed should cause many to be put to death, in the like manner as he was, and that they should be scattered abroad and slain, even as a sheep having no shepherd is driven and slain by wild beasts; and now behold, these words were verified, for *they were driven by the Lamanites, and they were hunted, and they were smitten*.”

Given also that no more mention is made of the Amulonites (other than Alma 43) and the fulfilling of Abinadi’s prophecy, I wonder if there even were any more Amulonites among the Lamanites after Alma 25; if there were, I imagine they didn’t number many. A more interesting comment from Tvedtnes would have been on why the mention of them in Alma 43, after Alma 25…
